Choosing the right windows for your home

At Harrogate Superior Glass we understand the importance of choosing the correct window style for your home so check out our handy guide!

Before starting it’s good to know what the main types of WIndows are

  • Casement windows

  • Vertical sliding (sash) windows

  • Tilt and turn windows

  • Roof windows

Casement Windows

Casement Windows are the most typical form of windows and feature full height opening windows hinged on the outside edges. They tend to have a fixed section in the middle and can feature a small vertically opening window in the top centre. These are a great ‘Do it all Window’ as they tend to fit with most styles of home and can fit with older designed houses as well as some modern designs. They are great for ventilation but are not great on lower floors due to there being no real locking mechanism when they are open.

Sash Windows

Sash Windows are typified by their vertically sliding lower window section that locks against the upper fixed section and are a very traditional style found on farm houses and old town houses. They have thick frames and benefit from not needing space to open outward as they slide upwards. They are great specifically for historic properties like Victorian townhouses.

Tilt and Turn Windows

Tilt and turn windows are an extremely modern design featuring large panes of glass that can open in a number of ways. Due to having an internal locking mechanism controlled by a swivel handle the way the windows open can be controlled between opening like a traditional casement window or partly opening vertically. This makes them great for ground floor rooms as they can be locked in an open position allowing ventilation while maintaining safety.

Roof Windows

Roof Windows are windows that can open upwards and outwards and are installed on sloping surfaces. They are great for converting lofts into extra bedrooms and allowing natural light to fall into stair wells if they can be opened right up to the roof. They can also be great in first level extensions for allowing light in such as over extended kitchens.

So there are the main types of windows with a few point to help you decide which one might be best suited to your application.
